The biggest lottery winners and losers around the world in the last decade

The odds of winning big in the lottery are pretty slim, but this doesn’t stop most people from fantasizing about how their lives would be changed overnight as a result of taking home a huge pile of cash.

In 2016 alone, the total revenue from lottery sales in the US was $73 billion, and loan marketplace Lendedu calculated that figure meant Americans spent around $233.04 per head on lottery tickets that year.

The last decade boasted some of the biggest lottery wins of all time, including a whopping $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot in the US in 2016 — the world’s biggest ever jackpot.

Big lottery wins have also resulted in some tragic losses for those who came into large amounts of money so publicly.

As 2019 comes to an end, Insider took a look at some of the biggest lottery winners and losers of the past decade from around the world.

In 2016, a whopping $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot was won in the US — the world's biggest ever jackpot.

Powerball Losers Make Lemonade By Selling Losing Lottery Tickets

Everyone wants to win, but if you don’t, at least you don’t have to pay taxes. On the other hand, can you deduct all your losses? Usually, the answer is no, since gambling losses are generally only deductible to the extent you have gambling winnings. You can deduct your gambling losses on Schedule A to your Form 1040. That’s where all your itemized deductions go. But your deduction is limited to the amount of your winnings. You must report your winnings as income and claim your allowable losses separately.

You cannot reduce your winnings by your losses and report the difference. However, if you win $100 but spend $50 on tickets, you really only have a $50 profit. From that simple rule, a business idea was born to straddle the gap between lottery winners and lottery losers. This ‘business’ is a controversial cottage industry that helps lottery winners dodge taxes. The idea was to gather up and sell losing lottery tickets. Just go on on Craigslist and eBay.

A customer holds a handful of Powerball tickets at Kavanagh Liquors on January 13, 2016 in San . [+] Lorenzo, California. Dozens of people lined up outside of Kavanagh Liquors, a store that has had several multi-million dollar winners, to purchase Powerball tickets in hopes of winning the estimated record-breaking $1.5 billion dollar jackpot. (Photo by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)

Perhaps you might help winners offset the profits with what might look like real gambling losses. But beware, these losses are phony. Large volumes of losing tickets are worthless, but in an odd tax-shelter way, not necessarily to everybody. Someone out there might want to buy them! And what about the flip side of this anything-goes marketplace? Some advertisers want to buy winners, not losers. This is also pretty clever. Say you have a winning ticket, but you don’t want to step forward to claim it. You know it’s a surefire winner, but to stay in the shadows, you might be willing to sell it at a discount.

That way, the reasoning goes, you won’t have to pay tax. And the person who buys it will have to claim it and get taxed. In fairness, it’s not just the taxes that these closet winners are trying to dodge. There could be court orders like child support or spousal maintenance, or other types of legal debts. Sometimes the ads are explicit, indicating willingness to buy a $1,000 ticket for $750 and take care of the taxes.

Some people call these underground buyers “Ten Percenters.” For a fee, they’ll cash in your winning ticket so you can stay on the down low. But be careful. For all parties, there could be criminal violations here. The state or federal government might even be able to add a conspiracy charge. To be clear, being—or dealing with—a Ten Percenter is not wise.

The fact that the lotteries themselves are unhappy about this may be the biggest warning sign. Some claim that no one is doing enough to discourage this. In Massachusetts, the Attorney General’s office is said to be stirring the Ten Percenter pot. If someone cashes hundreds of winning tickets, what are the odds?Arguably, though, buying losing tickets is a more nuanced strategy. Losing tickets seem to be easy to find to generate phony losses.

If you had to prove you bought them when they still had a chance to win, that could mess up any tax strategy, no matter how misguided. So how big is this problem? It’s not clear, and much of the juice may be in small but repetitive dollars. That could mean the IRS won’t look too hard. Conversely, Ten Percenters in the horse racing industry–or in more big time lottery payments–could face tax evasion charges and jail.

But what’s legal and what’s not can be debated. It is evidently legal to buy or sell used tickets, though not for the purpose of tax evasion or fraud. A run for the state border with your cash isn’t likely to work either, however tempting it may sound.

Remember, you can be taxed even if you split the money with family, friends or charity unless you are careful. Lottery winners frequently make tax mistakes. In Dickerson v. Commissioner, an Alabama waitress won a $10 million jackpot on a ticket given to her by a customer. The Tax Court held her liable for gift tax when she transferred the winning ticket to a family corporation. Maybe you shouldn’t do tax planning in a waffle house.

The moral? Plan your tax moves carefully. Tax problems can snowball–not unlike Powerball jackpots.

Your losing lottery tickets might just be worth something after all, in the great free-for-all post Powerball drawing. ]]>

How Powerball Works and What You Need to Know to Win

The Ultimate Guide to Playing and Winning the Powerball Lottery

Do you have questions about Powerball? Read this guide to learn what it is, how you enter, how to boost your odds of winning, and much more.

What Is the Powerball Lottery?

Powerball is a multi-state lottery. It runs in all but six of the US states as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.

It replaced the Lotto*America lottery in 1992, becoming the first lottery game to use two drums to draw winners. One drum is used for the white balls and one for the red “Power” ball, which gives the lottery its name.

It offers one jackpot, which increases every time that no winning jackpot ticket is sold, and a variety of smaller cash prizes.

How Powerball Drawings Work

Winners are drawn on Wednesday and Saturday nights at 10:12 PM Central Time. The drawings are conducted at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. The winning numbers are announced on television, on the Powerball website, in newspapers, and online.

In order to win the jackpot, players must correctly match all five white balls as well as the red Powerball.

There’s no guarantee that a jackpot will be awarded in every drawing. If no one picks all six winning numbers, the jackpot rolls over to the next drawing.

As jackpot values soar, more and more people buy tickets, so a larger percentage of the possible number combinations are sold. Eventually, it becomes nearly impossible for a drawing to occur without a winner.

The Powerball Lottery’s jackpot starts at $40 million and grows by at least $10 million each time the jackpot is not awarded. The jackpot can, and often does, reach values of hundreds of millions of dollars. As of 2016, the largest lottery jackpot in the history of the world was a Powerball jackpot worth over $1.5 billion dollars.

But there’s more to Powerball than just the jackpot prizes. In every drawing, other cash prizes worth between $4 and $2,000,000 are also awarded. The value of the prizes depends on how many numbers a player has guessed correctly, and the number of prizes awarded in each drawing is limited only by how many people make correct guesses.

How Much Does It Cost to Play Powerball?

Basic Powerball cards cost $2 apiece. For an additional dollar, you can add the PowerPlay option, which increases the size of your prize if you correctly guess one to five qualifying numbers. So the maximum cost of a single Powerball ticket is $3.

How Does PowerPlay Work?

If you purchase the PowerPlay option, the value of any prize you win for matching fewer than five balls will be multiplied by a randomly-drawn value between two and five. If the jackpot is worth less than $150 million, a 10x multiplier will be added to the mix.

For the payouts for matching five or six balls, the PowerPlay option works differently. The million-dollar prize that’s awarded for matching five white balls without the PowerBall is always doubled to $2 million with the PowerPlay option. The other multipliers don’t come into play.

The PowerPlay doesn’t affect the size of the jackpot, which is fixed whether you purchase the PowerPlay option or not. No multipliers apply to jackpot payouts.

How Do You Play Powerball?

Powerball is a two-drum lottery game. One drum holds 69 white balls, while the other drum holds 26 red balls. Only one red ball will be drawn, and that red ball is called the Powerball.

When you buy your ticket, you select five numbers, which will be drawn from the first drum with the white balls, and one Powerball number. The winning Powerball number will be drawn from the second drum with the red balls.

You can choose your Powerball numbers or you can use Quick Pick, which draws your numbers for you at random.

Do Powerball Numbers Have to Be In the Right Order to Win?

The order of your first five Powerball numbers doesn’t affect your chances of winning. If you pick the numbers 1 3 9 13 17 and the Powerball 6, and the winning numbers come up 17 9 1 3 13 (6), you’ll still win the jackpot.

However, you must correctly guess the Powerball to win the jackpot. So in the example above, if the winning numbers come up 17 9 6 3 13 (1), you would not be a jackpot winner.

How Many Balls Do You Need to Win a Powerball Prize?

To win a Powerball prize, you only need to pick one single number correctly: the red Powerball.

Picking the Powerball alone will award you a $4 prize, which means that with a $2 purchase, you have one in 26 odds of doubling your investment in your ticket (there are 26 red balls to choose from).

To win the Powerball Jackpot, you need to match all five white balls in any order, as well as the red Powerball.

Here are all the Powerball payouts:

Basic Powerball Payouts:

  • 5 Correct White Balls and the Powerball: Jackpot (starts at $40 million, has no upper limit)
  • 5 Correct White Balls, but no Powerball: $1,000,000
  • 4 Correct White Balls and the Powerball: $10,000
  • 4 Correct White Balls, but no Powerball: $100
  • 3 Correct White Balls and the Powerball: $100
  • 3 Correct White Balls, but no Powerball: $7
  • 2 Correct White Balls and the Powerball: $7
  • 1 Correct White Ball and the Powerball: $4
  • No White Balls, Just the Powerball: $4

Payouts for Powerball with PowerPlay:

  • 5 Correct White Balls and the Powerball: Jackpot
  • 5 Correct White Balls, but no Powerball: $2,000,000
  • 4 Correct White Balls and the Powerball: $20,000 – $100,000*
  • 4 Correct White Balls, but no Powerball: $200 – $1,000*
  • 3 Correct White Balls and the Powerball: $200 – $1,000*
  • 3 Correct White Balls, but no Powerball: $14 – $70*
  • 2 Correct White Balls and the Powerball: $14 – $70*
  • 1 Correct White Ball and the Powerball: $8 – $40*
  • No White Balls, Just the Powerball: $8 – $40*

*The exact payout will depend on whether a 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X, or 10X multiplier was drawn at random. The 10X multiplier is available only when the jackpot is worth less than $150 million.

What Are the Odds of Winning Powerball?

Powerball.com lists the odds of winning a Powerball prize . As of February 25, 2020, the odds were listed as follows:

  • 5 White Balls and Powerball (Jackpot): 1 in 292,201,338
  • 5 White Balls, but no Powerball: 1 in 11,688,053.52
  • 4 Correct White Balls and the Powerball: 1 in 913,129.18

  • 1 Correct White Ball and the Powerball: 1 in 91.98
  • No White Balls, Just the Powerball: 1 in 38.32
  • Overall Odds of Winning Any Prize: 1 in 24.87

What Is Powerball Multi-Draw?

Powerball Multi-Draw lets you easily play the same numbers on up to 26 consecutive drawings at the same time. Using Multi-Draw helps ensure you don’t miss a drawing.

You can also choose the Future Drawing option on your Powerball ticket to play on specific dates. So if you feel like an upcoming date will be particularly lucky for you (maybe a birthday, anniversary, or a date containing a lucky number), you can be sure you won’t forget to play on that day.

Is There a Secret to Winning Powerball?

The Powerball.com FAQ Page points out that if you buy a Powerball card for every possible red ball, you’ll be guaranteed to win at least the small prize. Of course, you’ll have spent $52 to guarantee a $4 win, but if you match some of the white balls on those 39 cards as well, your total winnings will be higher.

Other than that, there’s no secret to choosing winning numbers that will improve your odds. The number draw is totally random. Some people enjoy trying to work out a lottery strategy, but don’t put too much faith in them.

However, read these lottery-winning tips that really work to find no-nonsense tips that can raise your chances of winning.

If you have friends or coworkers who enjoy playing the lottery, you can also join together to increase your odds of winning without paying more money by using a lottery pool.

Is Playing Powerball Worthwhile?

Whenever the Powerball jackpot gets really big, tons of people start entering for the chance of winning hundreds of millions of dollars. After all, about one in five people believe that the best way to get rich is to hit a lottery jackpot. But does it make sense to play Powerball?

There’s no definitive answer to that question. But statisticians have devised a formula to help you determine whether the risk is worth the potential payoff. To find out what that formula is and how it works, read the entertaining and informative article, Is Powerball a Mug’s Game? from Slate.

Which States Do Not Participate in the Powerball Lottery?

The Powerball Lottery is not available in Nevada, Utah, Mississippi, Alabama, Alaska, and Hawaii.

How Will You Know When You Win the Powerball Lottery?

To find out if you’ve won a Powerball prize, you need to check your numbers. If you are contacted by someone telling you you’ve won a jackpot, you’re probably dealing with a lottery scam.

Many television stations broadcast the Powerball drawings live. You can also check your local newspaper or Google for the results online.

You can bring your ticket to a gas station, convenience store, or other location which sells tickets, to let them check your winnings for you. Just be sure to sign your ticket first, to avoid being scammed out of a win. It’s best to ask for the winning numbers and check yourself than to hand over your ticket and ask if you’ve won.

There are also lottery apps that make it easy to check winning numbers. Some will even notify you if the tickets you have purchased come up as winners.

If you want to check the winning numbers online, see my list of winning lottery numbers by state for the right links.

Money from every ticket you buy helps to benefit communities across Arizona, through community programs in a wide range of areas, from arts and education to environmental conservation.

As its name suggests, the mission of the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery is to further education causes throughout the state. It does this by encouraging players to buy tickets for exciting multi-state games like Powerball and Lucky for Life, as well as other lotteries exclusive to the state.

Roughly 92 cents from every dollar spent on lottery tickets is given back in the form of prizes and funding for education. To date, the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery has provided over , scholarships to students in the state, spread across 47 universities, colleges, and technical schools.

Lotteries are incredibly popular in California, and the state is also home to some of the most famous winners in lottery history. California is also the only state in which lottery prizes must be pari-mutuel, meaning they are directly based on how many tickets are sold and how many winners there are in a particular draw.

For that reason, prize amounts can vary from draw to draw. To generate money like that, the Colorado Lottery has to give people a reason to play, so it offers the big three multi-state games — Mega Millions, Powerball, and Lucky for Life — as well as its own range of games.

Like many lotteries, the CT Lottery offers a mix of multi-state and state-specific games, but Lucky Links is one of the most unique.

The numbers you pick are arranged in a 3×3 grid and you win prizes by matching certain combinations of the winning line. The Delaware Lottery offers a range of draw games, including Lotto America, giving players in The First State the opportunity to play for hundreds of millions of dollars every week.

Players in Delaware were first introduced to Lotto America in , but the lottery was founded over a decade earlier, in Each one is played twice a day, once at midday and again in the evening, and between them they hand out hundreds of thousands of dollars in prize money on a daily basis.

Lottery winners in Georgia are awarded billions of dollars in prize money every year, thanks to multi-state games such as Powerball and Cash 4 Life, as well as exclusive games like Jumbo Bucks Lotto and Georgia 5.

It is also one of only several states in which lottery games can be played online, making it easier than ever for players to enter the most popular games Georgia has to offer.

All this helps the Georgia Lottery raise hundreds of millions of dollars every year for education programs throughout the state. Its HOPE Scholarship program helps thousands of students attend college every year, while its Prekindergarten Pre-K program provides support for children just beginning their journey into education.

The state also awards licenses for bingo and raffle games to qualifying charitable and non-profit organizations. The Idaho Lottery gives around 65 percent of its revenue back to players in the form of prizes, with a further 21 percent dividend going to support education in the state.

Past dividends have been used to fund everything from school surveillance systems to bus lanes. A Fireball number is selected after each standard draw, and if you opted in you can replace one of your other numbers with the Fireball number drawn, giving you even more chances to win.

Adding Fireball doubles your wager but improves your odds of winning by 75 percent in Pick 4 and 66 percent in Pick 3.

The state also sells specialty tickets for several games designed to raise money for good causes. Much of this money is distributed to local government around the state through the Build Indiana Fund, where it is used for public services, infrastructure, and the construction and maintenance of public buildings.

The Iowa Lottery was one of the founding members of the original Lotto America when it launched in , and the state now participates in the revamped version of the game.

It also has a wide range of instant games, including scratch games, Pull-Tabs, and InstaPlay, with which you can win tens of thousands of dollars on the spot.

If draw games are more your thing, you can play Pick 3 and Pick 4 twice a day for as little as 50 cents a time.

The overall odds of winning are about as low as you will get with any draw game, at 1 in 3. You are given a Quick Pick of five random playing card symbols from the 52 that make up a standard deck of cards and you have two chances to win.

If your five cards form one of nine different types of poker hands — from a pair all the way up to a Royal Flush — you win a prize instantly.

If your tastes are more conventional, the Kentucky Lottery also offers popular multi-state games like Powerball and Mega Millions, as well as other signature games, such as Cash Ball and its newest game, Quick Bucks.

Lotto is just one of the games that helps raise millions of dollars for the Louisiana State Treasury every year. It was the first-multi state lottery to be formed, before the advent of Lotto America, Powerball, or Mega Millions.

It also has the standard Pick 3 and Pick 4 draw games, in which you can win prizes by matching three or four numbers in various combinations.

You pick your first six numbers and then you get two further Quick Picks, with the aim of matching one of these lines with the six winning numbers.

MiniLotto online spielen

MiniLotto Teilnahme in Deutschland

So spielt man MiniLotto

Live Powerball results for 01/20/21; jackpot worth $730 million

LANSING, MI — A night after no one won a $865 million Mega Millions jackpot, lottery players hope tonight is their lucky night as the estimated Powerball jackpot for the drawing on Wednesday, Jan. 20 is worth $730 million. The cash option for tonight’s drawing is worth $546 million.

Should ticket sales exceed expectations, the Powerball jackpot could be even larger. Tonight’s top prize is already the fourth largest jackpot in Powerball history and the sixth largest in U.S. lottery history.

Once again, MLive will be providing live results of tonight’s drawing and will update this story with the winning numbers as they come in.

The winning numbers are: 40-53-60-68-69

The Powerball drawing takes place at 10:59 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the following TV stations throughout the state:

  • WBKB-TV 11 (CBS)
  • WDIV-TV 4 (NBC)
  • WNEM-TV 5 (CBS)
  • WXSP-TV (MyNetwork TV)
  • WLAJ-TV 53 (ABC)
  • WMKG-TV 38 (IND)
  • WLUC-TV 6 (NBC/FOX)

Following the drawing, MLive will publish an update in the morning that includes whether or not anyone won the jackpot.

For the latest on Michigan Lottery, check out the official Michigan Lottery site, which also offers more information on instant tickets, raffles and other lottery games.

The last player from Michigan to win a Mega Millions or Powerball jackpot was Cristy Davis of Waterford who won $70 million playing Powerball in February. With her winnings, Davis said she planned to buy a new house and car.

And while she was a lucky winner, it’s smart for players to check their tickets immediately as a winner worth $1 million sold in Hartland in 2019 went unclaimed. The ticket was purchased at the Speedway in Hartland, but the winner never came forward to claim the prize. The money instead went to the state’s School Aid Fund.

If you’d like to be the next player from Michigan to win a huge lottery prize, take a look at these tips from lottery expert Richard Lustig. The author of “Learn How To Increase Your Chances Of Winning The Lottery” has won more than $1 million in Florida by winning top jackpot prizes in smaller games.

Thanks to math and bad luck, lottery players had another shot at a giant jackpot Wednesday night with a $730 million Powerball prize was on the line. The winning ticket was sold in Maryland, pushing the new jackpot to an estimated $20 million for the next drawing Saturday.

The Powerball jackpot was the fifth-largest ever, and it came only a day after nobody won the even-larger Mega Millions prize, which now stands at $970 million.

Winning numbers for Wednesday night’s Powerball drawing were: 40-53-60-68-69 and a Powerball of 22.

It was the first time both lottery jackpots topped $700 million. The biggest prize was a $1.58 billion Powerball jackpot won by three people in 2016.

No one had won either of the jackpots since mid-September, allowing the prizes to grow steadily for months. Such a long stretch without a winner is rare but also reflects the incredibly small odds of winning — one in 292.2 million for Powerball and one in 302.5 million for Mega Millions.

Maryland lottery spokeswoman Carole Gentry said Tuesday night’s Mega Millions drawing saw $260 million in sales, resulting in 36% of all possible number combinations being covered.

The prizes listed are for winners who choose an annuity option, paid over 30 years. Most winners opt for cash prizes, which for Mega Millions would be $716.3 million and $546 million for Powerball.

Those prizes also would be subject to federal taxes, and most states would take a cut as well.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — One winning ticket was sold in Michigan for the $1 billion Mega Millions jackpot, making it the third-largest lottery prize in U.S. history.

The winning numbers drawn Friday are: 4, 26, 42, 50, 60 and a Mega Ball of 24. The winning ticket was purchased at a Kroger store in Novi, Michigan — a city about 8 miles (13 kilometers) northwest of Detroit — according to the Michigan Lottery website.

The Mega Millions top prize had been growing since Sept. 15, when a winning ticket was sold in Wisconsin. The lottery’s next estimated jackpot is $20 million.

Friday night’s drawing comes two days after a ticket sold in Maryland matched all six numbers drawn and won a $731.1 million Powerball jackpot.

Only two lottery prizes in the U.S. have been larger than Friday’s jackpot. Three tickets for a $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot were sold in January 2016, and one winning ticket sold for a $1.537 billion Mega Millions jackpot in October 2018.

The jackpot figures refer to amounts if a winner opts for an annuity, paid in 30 annual installments. Most winners choose a cash prize, which for the Mega Millions jackpot is $739.6 million.

The odds of winning a Mega Millions jackpot are incredibly steep at one in 302.5 million.

The game is played in 45 states as well as Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

$1 Billion Lottery Prize Ticket Was Sold in Michigan

An unidentified person bought the Mega Millions ticket at a grocery store in Novi, Mich. It was the third-biggest jackpot in U.S. history.

  • Jan. 23, 2021

The winning ticket for a $1 billion jackpot, the third-biggest lottery prize in U.S. history, was sold at a Michigan grocery store, according to state lottery officials.

The winning numbers, which were drawn on Friday night, were picked by a customer at a Kroger grocery store in Novi, a city of about 60,000 people that is 30 miles northwest of Detroit.

State lottery officials said the identity of the winner will not be known until the person contacts them. Michigan law requires that winners of games played across states, such as Mega Millions and Powerball, be publicly identified, said Jake Harris, a spokesman for the state lottery.

The winner can choose to collect the prize through an initial payment and then annual payments for 29 years, or receive a one-time cash payment of about $739 million. In that case, the winner would get about $530 million, after taxes, state lottery officials said.

If the winner chose an annual payout, the initial payment would be about $11.3 million after taxes, with payments increasing 5 percent every year. The final payment would be about $46.7 million after taxes, Mr. Harris said.

The odds of winning the jackpot were 1 in 302,575,350, according to Mega Millions. The winning numbers in the Mega Millions lottery were 4, 26, 42, 50 and 60, with a Mega Ball number of 24.

The numbers were picked two days after the numbers were selected for a winning ticket in a $731 million Powerball jackpot, which was sold in Lonaconing, Md., a down-on-its-luck former mining town in the virus-battered northwestern corner of the state. The winning ticket was sold at Coney Market, a convenience store that sells subs and pizza in Lonaconing, a town of about 1,200 in Allegany County, which has the most Covid-19 cases per capita in the state. About a quarter of the population of Lonaconing lives below the poverty line, according to census data.

A spokeswoman for Kroger congratulated the winner in Michigan and the mayor of Novi, Bob Gatt, said the news came a month after the city was named “the second-most innovative city in the country” by Entrepreneur magazine.

He described Novi as a rapidly growing city that had once been a rural outpost of Detroit but was now a hub of car manufacturing that was attracting tech companies like Google.

Mr. Gatt said he was “ecstatic” for the winner. “I’d be better if I had the winning ticket,” he said.

The jackpot was the second-largest prize in the history of Mega Millions.

In 2018, a person who chose to remain anonymous won $1.537 billion in South Carolina. That prize remains the world’s largest lottery prize ever awarded on a single ticket, according to Mega Millions.

The biggest lottery prize ever awarded in the United States was a $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot in 2016, according to The Associated Press. It was divided among three ticket winners in California, Florida and Tennessee.

A lingering mythology holds that the winners of big jackpots become cursed after their strokes of good fortune. There are numerous accounts of winners who, unequipped to manage their newfound wealth, go on to struggle with drugs or alcohol, ruined relationships and insolvency.

While one influential study in 1978 found that lottery winners were not any happier than their neighbors or more optimistic about the future, other studies have countered the notion of the so-called lottery curse.

The studies suggest that the winners’ general psychological well-being bounces back over time.

In 2018, a New Hampshire woman filed a lawsuit to keep her name from being released to the public after she won $560 million in the Powerball lottery.

Lawyers for the woman, who called herself Jane Doe in the lawsuit, said she wished to use a portion of her winnings for charity “far from the glare and misfortune that has often fallen upon other lottery ‘winners.’”

An unidentified person bought the Mega Millions ticket at a grocery store in Novi, Mich. It was the third-biggest jackpot in U.S. history.

Who Won the $731 Million Powerball?

The winning ticket was sold at a convenience store in a former mining town in Maryland. “We don’t know for who,” the shopkeeper said, “but we are happy for somebody.”

  • Published Jan. 21, 2021 Updated Jan. 23, 2021

Someone in Maryland is suddenly $731 million richer.

A jackpot-winning Powerball ticket was sold at a convenience store in Lonaconing, Md., a down-on-its-luck former mining town in the virus-battered northwestern corner of the state. The ticket matched all six numbers during Wednesday evening’s Powerball drawing.

The $731.1 million jackpot is the fourth largest in Powerball’s 28-year history and the sixth largest lottery jackpot ever in the United States, Powerball announced on Thursday. The drawing was the highest the Powerball jackpot has been since March 2019, when it rose to $768 million.

Powerball did not immediately name the winner. Lottery winners in Maryland can choose to remain anonymous, and they have at least 182 days to claim the prize.

The winning ticket was sold at Coney Market, a convenience store that sells subs and pizza in Lonaconing, a small town — population 1,200 — in Allegany County, which has the most Covid-19 cases per capita in the state. About a quarter of the population of Lonaconing lives below the poverty line, according to census data.

“We were surprised and very happy,” Richard Ravenscroft, the store’s owner, said in an interview on Thursday. “We don’t know for who, but we are happy for somebody.”

The store will receive a $100,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the winning ticket. The winning numbers in Wednesday’s drawing were 40, 53, 60, 68, 69 and a Powerball of 22.

According to Powerball, the winner can choose to have an estimated pretax annuity of $731.1 million paid in 30 payments over 29 years, or a lump sum of $546.8 million, also before taxes. The odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are one in 292.2 million.

Another national lottery closed in on a record jackpot this week: Before its drawing on Friday, Mega Millions estimates that its jackpot will reach $970 million, which would be the second-largest prize in the game’s history.

A lingering mythology holds that the winners of big jackpots become cursed after their strokes of good fortune. There are numerous accounts of winners who, unequipped to manage their newfound wealth, go on to struggle with substance abuse, ruined relationships and insolvency.

One influential study in 1978 found that lottery winners were not any happier than their neighbors or more optimistic about the future. But other studies have countered the notion of the so-called lottery curse, suggesting that the winners’ general psychological well-being bounces back over time after cashing in the prize.

Mr. Ravenscroft, who has owned Coney Market for six years, said he wished the winner luck. “I really think that they have quite an opportunity, and I hope they use good judgment,” he said.

The Powerball jackpot was last hit in New York in the Sept. 16 drawing. Since then, there had been 35 games in a row without a jackpot winner until Wednesday.

The next drawing will be on Saturday, when the Powerball jackpot resets to $20 million.

The winning ticket was sold at a convenience store in a former mining town in Maryland. “We don’t know for who,” the shopkeeper said, “but we are happy for somebody.” ]]>

Powerball® costs $2 per play.

Select five numbers from 1 to 69 for the white balls; then select one number from 1 to 26 for the red Powerball.

Choose your numbers on a play slip or let the lottery terminal randomly pick your numbers.

The Powerball jackpot grows until it is won.

Players win a prize by matching one of the 9 Ways to Win.

Where

Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands!

Powerball drawings are held every Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. ET.

Sales cut-off times vary by one to two hours before the drawing, depending on the selling jurisdiction.

To find out where to watch the drawings, click here.

Power Play

Ask for Power Play® with your Powerball purchase!

For an additional $1 per play, the Power Play feature can multiply non-jackpot prizes by 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10 times!

The multiplier number is randomly selected just before each drawing.

The 10X multiplier is only in play when the advertised jackpot annuity is $150 million or less.

The Match 5 prize with Power Play is always $2 million.

Multi-Draw

Play the same set of numbers in multiple drawings!

Select the number of consecutive drawings you want to play in the Multi-Draw or Advance Play section of your play slip or tell the retailer how many drawings you wish to play.

The number of Multi-Draws or Advance Plays available for purchase is dependent on the selling jurisdiction.

How TALL

A Powerball jackpot of $40 million may not seem like much, but ask yourself this – is $40 million really a small amount of money? Is the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. a small building?

If you were to stack $100 bills, take a look at the heights the money would reach at each estimated jackpot amount.
