$731 Million Powerball Jackpot Hits in Maryland; Resets to $20 Million for Jan. 23

Congratulations are in order as a winning ticket sold in Maryland won the $731.1 million Powerball jackpot on Jan. 20!

Thus, this means for Saturday, Jan. 23, the Powerball jackpot resets to $20 million with a $15 million cash value.

It was a historic week for lottery jackpots. Two days after the Maryland winner, the second-largest Mega Millions jackpot in history, $1.05 billion ($776.6 million cash payout), hit in Michigan. There were also ten second-place winners for the Jan. 22 Mega Millions drawing, including one in PA worth $1 million.

Powerball drawings occur on Wednesdays and Saturdays after 11 p.m. EST. Find tonight’s numbers posted below.

Multiplier: 3X

Fourth largest Powerball jackpot prize

Circling back, the $731.1 million jackpot won is the fourth-largest Powerball jackpot and also the sixth-largest in the US, according to a press release. Overall, this jackpot is the largest in Maryland’s history.

The lucky jackpot winner will make a choice when it comes time to claim the prize. The winner can choose to have the $731.1 million paid in 30 graduated payments spanning a period of 29 years or a lump-sum payment of $546.8 million.

However, taxes definitely put a dent in the eye-watering amount. In detail, remember that there is federal withholding tax of 24% and Maryland state withholding tax of 8.95%.

$150k ticket sold in PA

Although not a big jackpot winner, there was a Powerball ticket worth $150,000 sold in Blair County for the previous drawing. The winning numbers for Jan. 20 were 40 – 53 – 60 – 68 -69 with a red Powerball of 22.

The winning ticket sold at Sheetz located on 405 E. 25th Ave in Altoona would have only been worth $50,000 for matching four white balls and the red Powerball. However, the $1 Power Play option was purchased and the multiplier for the drawing was 3X. Thus, the winning ticket boosts the prize to $150,000.

The Powerball jackpot for Saturday’s lottery drawing has rolled back to an estimated $20 million after someone who bought a ticket in Maryland won Wednesday’s $731.7 million prize.

Saturday’s winning numbers were: 5, 8, 17, 27, 28. The Powerball drawn was 14 with a Power Play of 3X.

In addition to the jackpot-wining ticket, three $1 million tickets were bought in New Jersey for Wednesday’s drawing. In all, 13 second-prize tickets were sold across the country.

Six third-prize tickets were also bought in the Garden State — five valued at $50,000 and one worth $150,000. The jackpot was the fifth-largest in U.S. lottery history.

Wednesday’s winning numbers were: 40, 53, 60, 68, 69. The Powerball drawn was 22 with a Power Play of 3X.

Before Wednesday, the Powerball jackpot hasn’t been won since Sept. 16, when someone who bought a ticket in Ballston Spa, New York, captured the $94.6 million top prize.

The odds of hitting the Powerball jackpot are 292,201,388 to 1. A player who buys a $2 ticket has about a 1 in 11,688,053 chance to match five numbers and win at least $1 million, while the odds are 913,129 to 1 of winning the third prize of at least $50,000.

Powerball is played on Wednesday and Saturday in 45 states, Washington D.C., the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

The New Jersey Lottery office in Lawrence is open by appointment only. You can still claim your winnings — provided they’re less than $599.50 — in person at any retailer.

The lottery is also accepting mailed claims, though officials warn payments might be temporarily delayed. Winners are advised to make copies of the claim form and the winning ticket for their records.
